A woman at Kakolo village, Rachuonyo District, has delivered rare Siamese twins.

Mrs Caroline Atieno Ochieng, 22, gave birth to the twins with shared internal organs and joined on the back, last week.

One of the twins was born without a head, and doctors do not consider it a living baby.

On Wednesday, doctors at the Nyanza Provincial Hospital said the babies were a rare abnormality.

Dr Isaac Omeri said the abnormality was as a result of belated separation of the zygote (newly fertilised ovum) during the growth of the babies.

“The cause of the abnormality is the zygote separating after 13 days, instead of the normal three,” said Dr Omeri, adding that one of twins cannot develop, as it has no head.

The hospital’s medical superintendent, Dr Juliana Otieno, said the surgery of the twins was urgent and they were making plans to transfer them to Kenyatta National Hospital.

“The surgery is urgent so as to save the baby who is well formed. In such cases, surgery should be done immediately after birth,” said Otieno.

Omeri said the twins need specialised surgery, because they are joined at the buttocks and share some internal organs such as three kidneys.

The father of the twins, Mr John Owuor Ochieng, told The Standard that he believed what villagers told him about his misfortune.

“Villagers told me that the rare delivery of my wife is as a result of her using family planning pills,” said Ochieng, 24, who is an artisan in Nakuru town.

But Omeri said the abnormality could not result from usage of Family Planning pills.

The couple appealed to well-wishers to assist them financially.

The twins’ parents were referred to the provincial hospital from Ramula Health Centre, Rachuonyo District, last week.
